Phong Dien Wildlife Rescue

In August 2024, we began looking for locations to house a macaque rescue, rehabilitation, and release program in Central Vietnam and came upon Phong Dien Wildlife Center.  This park is managed by a scientific institute of Vietnam.  They have been looking for international organizations to manage their wildlife rescue center.  When we arrived, there was an obvious need for professional caretakers and management as the condition of the animals at the facility was dire.  We arranged for wildlife vets to come down for full exams on all the animals, and many were in such bad shape that they needed critical care or euthanasia.  We have committed to staffing the facility with our own wildlife caretakers to improve the lives of the turtles, tortoises, parrots, lizards, snakes, and one camel.

All animals onsite were confiscated from illegal wildlife trafficking and transported to the center, and as many of them are exotic species, we must provide lifelong sanctuary for them.  We are working to raise funds to build quarantine facilities, repair existing enclosures, and create new enclosures for the sanctuary residents and releasable native species.

The long-term goal is to have a site that we can use to rescue the five macaque species that are heavily trafficked in Vietnam.  Many of them are taken as babies to be pets and lack any social or survival skills.  These macaques will be given proper quarantine before meeting their troop for a soft release into the forest.
